Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
As any significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
