Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
